It’s the ultimate before and after view!
ADVENTURE THEATER
Find out what it takes to be a shipwreck explorer! In this short, high-definition film, you’ll learn about the science, technology and determination necessary to discover shipwrecks in the deep ocean.
ZEUS: Life-sized Replica
Meet ZEUS, Odyssey's eight-ton Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), then fly through a virtual shipwreck site! ZEUS is an amazing robot that serves as the eyes and hands of Odyssey’s archaeologists on shipwreck sites around the world. Armed with cameras, lights and manipulator arms, ZEUS can send real-time HD video to the surface ship, and recover delicate artifacts while recording their exact location, and can operate at depths to 2,500 meters (8,200 feet).
SS Republic®
Books have been written about her. TV specials and magazines have featured her fascinating story. Now you can immerse yourself in the history and discovery of the famous SS Republic. Under a full size replica of one of her paddlewheels, uncover amazing facts about the ship’s history, including service on both sides of the Civil War, and relive the events leading up to her tragic sinking. Try your hand at the wheel during the violent hurricane, explore the ¼ scale model of the distinctive walking beam engine that powered the massive paddlewheels, and study the detailed model of the ship.
Shipwreck Photomosaic
As part of the pre-disturbance survey of the SS Republic shipwreck site, Odyssey Marine Exploration took thousands of photos of the site. Approximately 2,500 digital images were “stitched” together to get this complete view of the SS Republic shipwreck 1,700 feet beneath the Atlantic. This interactive photomosaic lets you zoom right into individual frames so you can locate and identify individual artifacts.
Shipwreck Weather
What causes ships to sink or wreck? In many cases, weather plays a deciding factor. Learn about the history and science of weather prediction and navigation through today’s technologies. Experience hurricane force winds in the hurricane tube. Predict the course of hurricanes in an interactive game. Then pinpoint shipwreck locations around the world on the interactive globe.
The Quest (From Research to Recovery)
Find out what it takes to be a deep-ocean shipwreck explorer or marine archaeologist! Search the ocean depths with side-scan sonar. Is the image a valuable shipwreck or just geology on the seabed? Once the shipwreck is found, it’s time to put on an archaeologist’s hat and identify artifacts at The Archaeology Game. You can pilot a real Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and test your dexterity using a giant manipulator arm to pick up coins one at a time – just like Odyssey’s technicians do in the deep ocean!
World of Pirates
Beginning with the startling sight of a Gibbet Cage (pirate punishment) and ending with an invitation to be a pirate shipwreck archaeologist, Odyssey’s World of Pirates will immerse you in pirate lore, legend and facts. Pirates of the Caribbean are joined by Barbary Pirate Corsairs, Privateers, and Buccaneers in this interactive pirate exhibit. Raise the flags from some of the most famous and feared pirates. Learn to tie knots necessary in everyday pirate life. Test your ability to identify ships on the horizon as pirate predators or prey and find out what “treasures” pirates prized the most.
Stories of Shipwrecks
Throughout SHIPWRECKS! Pirates & Treasure, you’ll find interactive monitors that explore world history through the shipwrecks of the era. Explore Early Viking and Phoenician wrecks at the “Rise of Civilization” monitor - then continue your historic shipwreck journey through the “Age of Exploration”, the “Rise of Nationalism” and the “WWII and Global Era” which details the sinking of the Russian submarine Kursk, a modern-day tragedy. Interactive stations contain artifacts and a large format video display that can be surfed, browsed and explored at whatever level of detail desired. Among the featured shipwrecks is the story of HMS Sussex, a large 80-gun English warship lost in a severe storm in 1694.
